In the 1944 movie Hollywood Canteen Joan Crawford appears in one of the last scenes wearing the dress shown here. She’s onscreen for about 5 minutes, but what made me stop and take notice was her dress. It had this rather large but very cute cat face near her right shoulder …not too Joan Crawford to me …but it looked like a great dress.
Two weeks later I came across a picture of the dress online and found out it had been designed by Adrian… which explains why Joan Crawford wore it!
It’s a 2pc peplum dress in black crepe tied at the waist with a self tie. The peplum is slit at both center front and back while the long flared skirt has a side slit. The focal point of the dress is the little cat face peeking out at the shoulder and wrapping itself around the wearer front to back. The cat’s cute face has lively turquoise eyes and an actual black and white gingham (after all it’s an Adrian) taffeta bow at the neck.
The dress recently went up for auction and was estimated to sell for $1200-1500.
